TotalVPN Review (2025): Is it the right choice?
By Tibor Moes / Updated: January 2025
TotalVPN Review
A solid VPN that’s part of the TotalAV suite. TotalVPN offers great value for money as part of a package deal with TotalAV and its Ad Blocker. Since the companies behind TotalAV and Hotspot Shield recently merged, it wouldn’t be surprising if TotalVPN adopts Hotspot Shield’s VPN technology soon.
- Privacy: 60%. TotalVPN’s no-logs policy remains unclear and vague. More transparency about its logging practices is needed.
- Streaming: 100%. In our tests, Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer all worked flawlessly.
- Speed: 80%. TotalVPN is a fast service. While not as fast as NordVPN, it’s sufficient for most use cases.
- Security: 100%. Bundled with TotalAV and its Ad Blocker, TotalVPN is part of a comprehensive security suite.
With a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can try it risk-free.
Key Data
TotalVPN is ranked #9 of the 25 best VPNs of 2025.
Below are the key facts of our TotalVPN review.
Privacy
TotalVPN’s privacy policy is vague and lacks detailed information. It mentions collecting data about the device you use to access their services, such as IP addresses and other unique device identifiers. If you log in from a mobile device, it may also gather location data.
However, the policy does not clarify whether it logs users’ browsing activities, connection timestamps, or bandwidth usage. Until this is made clear, it might be better to opt for VPNs with a clear zero-log policy like NordVPN or Surfshark.
Streaming
TotalVPN does not have dedicated streaming servers, but in our tests, we watched shows on Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Netflix without any issues.
Speed
TotalVPN’s download speeds are impressive, with only a 7% slowdown in New York and 8% in Frankfurt. While it may not match the speeds of more established VPNs, it’s still fast enough for gaming, streaming, and downloading without issues.
Security
TotalVPN, as part of the TotalAV suite, offers a straightforward security experience suitable for undemanding users. While it doesn’t boast the advanced features, it adequately covers the essentials for basic VPN use.
Those seeking cutting-edge technology like RAM-servers, double VPN, the WireGuard protocol, should look to NordVPN or Surfshark.
Kill Switch
There are two kill switch options in the settings of the Windows app (these are not available to macOS users).
- The VPN Circuit Breaker ensures your internet connection is blocked if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly, protecting your data from accidental exposure.
- The VPN-Only Connection takes this a step further, restricting all internet activity to occur only when the VPN is active, ensuring constant protection.
Encryption and Protocols
In terms of encryption and protocols, TotalVPN relies on AES-256 encryption, a widely trusted standard. On Windows devices, the service offers two protocol options: IKEv2 and OpenVPN (both UDP and TCP). These protocols strike a balance between speed and security. The absence of WireGuard, a faster and more modern protocol, is notable.
Mac users, however, don’t have the option to choose a protocol, limiting flexibility for advanced users.
Leak Tests
During our tests, TotalVPN performed well in preventing data leaks. We found no IP, WebRTC, or DNS leaks, which means the service effectively shields your online identity and browsing activity from potential exposure.
Part of TotalAV
TotalVPN is not available as a standalone product; instead, it comes bundled with the TotalAV security suite. This integration means that in addition to the VPN, users also gain access to a range of broader cybersecurity tools, including an antivirus powered by Avira, a password manager, and an ad blocker.
While TotalVPN itself may lack the advanced features of some standalone VPNs, its inclusion in TotalAV provides users with a comprehensive cybersecurity solution that goes beyond basic VPN functionality.
Servers
TotalVPN’s server network is modest, offering just 50 servers across 30+ countries. While this coverage may be sufficient for a new VPN service, it’s clear that expansion is necessary to prevent potential issues like server congestion. A larger server network not only enhances reliability but also provides users with more options and faster connections.
One drawback of TotalVPN’s infrastructure is the lack of advanced server technologies. The service does not use RAM-only servers, which are increasingly becoming the industry standard for enhanced privacy and security, as RAM-based operations leave no residual data when servers are powered off.
Additionally, TotalVPN does not offer specialized server types such as P2P-optimized servers for torrenting, dedicated streaming servers for accessing platforms like Netflix, Onion over VPN for extra anonymity, or DoubleVPN for added encryption layers. These features are common among more established VPN providers and would be a welcome addition to TotalVPN’s offerings.
In terms of geographical distribution, TotalVPN’s servers are spread across all continents except Africa. The majority are concentrated in North America and Europe, which is typical of many VPN services. However, the inclusion of servers in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Brazil adds a degree of global reach. Expanding to underrepresented regions, particularly Africa, would improve accessibility and broaden the VPN’s appeal to a truly global audience.
Prices
TotalVPN, bundled within the TotalAV security suite, offers exceptional value for its price. At just €20 (or $20) per year, users receive a full suite of cybersecurity tools, including antivirus, an ad blocker, and a VPN—a deal that’s hard to beat.
This pricing undercuts budget-friendly competitors like Surfshark and Norton, while remaining far more affordable than premium options like NordVPN and ExpressVPN. For those seeking comprehensive security at a low cost, TotalVPN as part of TotalAV is a standout choice.
User reviews
To assess user satisfaction, we compared the reviews of all VPN brands using data from TrustPilot, a leading review platform.
TotalAV stands out with both the highest review score and the largest number of reviews on the platform. This level of positive feedback highlights the exceptional support and service TotalAV provides, leaving customers highly satisfied.
Ownership
TotalVPN is owned by Point Wild.
In December 2024, TotalVPN’s parent company, Total Security, merged with Pango Group to form Point Wild. The new company has a consumer, partner, and enterprise side.
On the consumer side, Point Wild serves over 25 million monthly active users in 150 countries through brands like Hotspot Shield, Betternet, Ultra, VPN360, Comparitech, and Total Security. These brands offer a variety of tools, including VPNs, antivirus software, and online privacy solutions, to enhance user security and privacy.
The partner side operates under the Pango brand, providing customizable security tools for businesses to boost customer trust and engagement.
For enterprises, Point Wild offers advanced solutions through brands like CyEx, which specializes in cyber and privacy incident response, and Simpluris, which provides legal and corporate administration services.
Point Wild is a major player in the online protection industry, with annual revenue projected at $600 million and a focus on consistent growth and innovation.
